.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 444 AM CDT Thu Aug 7 2025
The forecast period starts out with a ridge over the Central Plains
and a mid-level trough over the PACNW. A few weak showers have
developed early this morning across portions of western Iowa. Shower
and thunderstorm activity remains possible for western Iowa and
areas near the Missouri River on the Nebraska side of the border.
Gusty winds, small hail and locally heavy rainfall will be possible
with any storms that develop. Precipitation chances decrease by mid-
morning with skies clearing out. This afternoon, temperatures will
climb into the upper 80s in northern Nebraska, and the low to mid-
90s for areas south of a line from Albion to Walthill. Heat index
values this afternoon will range from 98 to 103.
Friday, the trough pushes west over the Dakotas. Low pressure
develops over Canada, sliding east-southeast over the Dakotas by
Friday night/Saturday morning. An attendant cold front over South
Dakota on Friday, will slide southeast into Nebraska by Friday
night. Ahead of the front, temperatures will climb into the mid to
upper 90s for most areas. Heat index values ranging from 103 to 107
are expected. Heat headlines may be needed as we get closer to
Friday.
Thunderstorms (20-30% chance) will be possible Friday evening into
Saturday morning, a few of which could become strong to severe. The
Storm Prediction Center has a Marginal Risk for severe weather for
areas along and north of the I-80 corridor. Northeastern
Nebraska has been outlooked in a Slight Risk for severe storms.
Cooler air moves in for the weekend as the front moves further
south. Saturday high temperatures will be primarily in the 80s. A
few low 90s will be possible in our southeastern counties where
the front will not pass through until later in the day. There
is another chance (20-40%) of evening thunderstorms, a few of
which may become strong toe severe. Overnight, thunderstorm
chances increase to around 40-60%.
Sunday brings another day of relief from the heat as the cold front
continues to move toward the Kansas/Nebraska border. Expected highs
currently range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. Chances (30%) of
showers and storms will be possible during the day Sunday, with
better chances (30-50%) in the evening and overnight hours. A few
storms may become strong to severe.
Monday through Wednesday brings the potential for a warming trend,
as zonal or southwesterly flow sets up over Nebraska and Iowa. Highs
on Monday will range from the upper 70s to mid-80s. By Wednesday,
widespread mid to upper 80s are expected. Isolated chances for
showers and storms will be possible each day through the end of the
forecast period.
